Nutty Mrs. Broam

 On Wednesday, PCDM and Kids Yoga explored a wonderful story about the life cycle of an acorn, Little Acorn by IglooBooks.  Nutty Mrs. Broam was able to share a copy with PCDM classrooms and young yogis at Pisgah, thanks to the generosity of retired Lexington One Administrator, Loretta Arnette!!💗 Everything has a beginning, middle, and end -- every thing, thought, experience, feeling -- and we explored the life cycle of the acorn to practice this idea.🌳

An acorn is a seed.  Be as small as you can be in SEED POSE.

Be a "baby tree" or seedling by balancing on your knees and reaching to the sky!

Now grow into a mature oak by balancing your TREE POSE. Try the pose on both sides of the body.  Be curious -- Is one leg stronger than the other?

The sun helps the acorn grow into a seedling.  The sun helps the seedling grow into a mature tree!🌞 You can "move like the sun" by linking several yoga poses together:

Feathered guests may build their nests in the branches of the tree.  Work WARRIOR III with both legs. Use your wings to help you balance.🐦

Spiders🕷 may build webs🕸 . . .

Beetles🐞 may scurry by . . .

Owls🦉 may "hoot" from the tree's branches at night!

We sang a song about the squirrel that hid the acorn in the ground!

And that's the end of this week's yoga blog post!

Working Together, Working with Fear

We yoga-ed the story Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson today!
The animals work together as they share space on the broom, kind of like the animals on the ark learned to work with Noah when we read We're All in the SAME Boat by Zachary Shapiro last Wednesday.

Here's some yogis having fun with this story in past Octobers:

Here's a version of Mrs. Broam ("Mrs. D") teaching this story: https://youtu.be/CFJ0lB8lkeY
We did "eagle mudra" instead of "stork pose" today.  We also swapped "dragon's breath" for a growling "high lunge!"

When something is SCARY . . . take DEEP BREATHS to calm and be strong! We breathed with Ed Emberley's Go Away, Big Green Monster.👾

We're ALL in the Same Boat!

We read a great book by Zachary Shapiro today: We're All in the Same Boat!  All the animals thought it would be great fun to take a trip on an ark until it rained and rained and rained some more.  They blamed Noah for not having the good time they anticipated . . . Noah reminded them, "We're All in the Same Boat!"  The animals listened and turned their attitudes around.  We practiced listening with a singing bowl today! When you listen well, your ears are ON, your eyes are ON, your brain is ON, your heart is ON, and your body is calm and your mouth rests.  Yay for Yoga at PCDM! #cooperation #positivethinking #beagoodlistener #youcandohardthings

zipaDeeBee Yoga has "Gone to the Dogs?!"

We yoga-ed to Harry the Dirty Dog by Gene Zion today at PCDM!  Harry made a not so great choice and got very, very dirty.  He started off as a white dog with black spots, but he ended up as a black dog with white spots??!  His family was able to wash him and clean the outside of him.  What happens when you make not so great choices like Eve and Adam did in "The First Sin" Bible Story? It's kind of like your heart gets dirty when you make mistakes like that.  God can clean up a dirty or broken heart! YEA for JESUS!  Yea for a reminder He always forgives us when we make "not so great choices" and sends us back out into the world to try and try again. #YAYforYOGA #JesusLovesMe #Forgiveness

Prayer zipaDeeBee Bangle

Prayer is a "phone call" to God, a conversation "day or night." Prayer keeps you "on track" and helps you feel "the peace and love of God in your heart."

Sun/Moon Charm -- repeat the above movement, now breathing in and out for 5 counts, arms reaching to 3 and 9 or fifteen minutes past or 'til the hour~2x

Whole World Mudra -- 1Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all the earth!

Praise Hands -- 2Worship the Lord with gladness:  come before Him with joyful songs.

Palms together, Thumbs north and south -- 3Know that the Lord is God:

Slide and Bend, Hold ⅔ of fingers -- it is He who made us;

Slide back to palms and Twist  -- and we are His People and sheep of his pasture.

Slide, Bend and Hold ⅔ on the opposite side -- 4Enter His gates with thanksgiving, and His courts with praise.

Slide back and twist to prayer hands -- Give thanks to Him, and praise His name:

Thumbs up -- 5For the Lord is good;

Heart Mudra -- his love endures forever;

Hold hands over heart -- his faithfulness continues through all generations.

He's Got the Whole World In His Hands

And He built the whole world with His hands!  We celebrated the story of creation with our yoga today at PCDM!

Day 1, light and dark, heavens and earth: Whole World Mudra, stretching tall to reach the heavens

Day 2, sky: Stand tall and imagine you see the sky with clouds! How would it be to sit on a cloud?  Try chair pose to sit and ponder . . .  oh, it might be challenging to sit on a cloud??

Day 3, dry land, plants, and seas: Tree, river, ocean waves, flower pose, flower mudra

Day 4, stars, moon, and sun: half sun salutations, crescent moon pose, star pose

Day 5, animals that fly: Warrior III, Eagle Mudra

Day 6, land animals and people: monkey, elephant, down dog, lion's breath, mouse, and breathing ball (Hoberman Sphere)

God rested on the 7th day!  Mrs. Deborah recently shared several ways we can rest and "recharge" -- rest your mind, take a break from devices, go outside for fresh air + sunshine, sleep more, do something you love! Mrs. D loves YOGA! You can do yoga to rest! How will you take care of you?

We Have CHICKEN Power!

We learned about being a good listener with our yoga today!  When you listen, use your ears, eyes, head and heart and rest your chicken wings (hands) and chicken lips (mouth) so you aren't an "Interrupting Chicken?!" Yoga helps keep your body calm for listening. Try a "big squeeze" to self-regulate --  squeeze muscles groups (muscles in your hands, arms, face, tummy/seat, legs, feet) tight, tight, tight and then relax . . . Other good "books! books! books!" to cluck for:  Big Chickens by Leslie Helakoski, Chickens to the Rescue by John Himmelman and Chicken Little by Rebecca and Ed Emberley. #zipaDeeBee #selfcare #feelingclucky #lovetolisten

Yoga is MAGIC!

Today at PCDM, Preschoolers and After-Schoolers explored how yoga is like MAGIC!  We discussed how breathing can be like magic when you calm and strengthen yourself with each deep breath.  We practiced moving and breathing.  We pretended to be butterflies, dogs, trees, giraffes and monkeys.  We took a magic carpet ride to the beach with our yoga!  We used our imaginations to enjoy the ocean, experiencing crab, fish, sea turtles, dolphins and sharks. Looking forward to more magical adventures on Wednesdays with Pisgah CDM🎩🐇

Granddaddy's Bangle

My mom's dad, J.A. Rawls, was a railroad engineer.

As a first grade teacher, my mom dressed up as a "Great American" for a school career day to honor him.  We think this was the mid to late 1990s.

This hymn reminds me of him.

"Life is like a mountain railroad, with an engineer that's brave;

We must make the run successful from the cradle to the grave;

Watch the curves, the fills, the tunnels, never falter, never quail; Keep your hand upon the throttle, and your eye upon the rail.

Blessed Savior, Thou wilt guide us, till we reach the blissful shore,

Where the angels wait to join us

In Thy praise forevermore."

My aunt, uncle, dad, and I sang this at a family reunion when I was little.  I used BRIGHT🌟 colors for this bangle.  It combines family, faith, and the brightness of the future🌟.

This picture was taken in 1991.  I was on my way to my 5th high school reunion.
Granddaddy always felt "rich" because he had his family close.  Granddaddy lived long enough to meet his first great grand. Remember to hold your people close as you "keep your hand upon the throttle, and your eye upon the rail."

"For the Beauty of the Earth" Bangle

For the beauty of the earth, for the beauty of the skies, for the love which from our birth over and around us lies: Christ, our God, to thee we raise this our sacrifice of praise.

For the wonder of each hour of the day and of the night, hill and vale and tree and flow'r, sun and moon and stars of light: Christ, our God, to thee we raise this our sacrifice of praise.

For the joy of ear and eye, for the heart and mind's delight, for the mystic harmony linking sense to sound and sight: Christ, our God, to thee we raise this our sacrifice of praise.

For the joy of human love, brother, sister, parent, child,

friends on earth and friends above; for all gentle thoughts and mild: Christ, our God, to thee we raise this our sacrifice of praise.

For each perfect gift of thine, peace on earth and joy in heav'n;

for thyself, best gift divine, to our world so freely giv'n: Christ, our God, to thee we raise this our sacrifice of praise.
