Poppins Power

Looking forward to s-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g, strengthening, balancing and breathing with PHES Families tomorrow, Sunday, January 27, 3:00-4:00 in the PE Room.  We will use the door closest to the track.  When you arrive, there will be several thinking tubs to explore:  peacock feather balance, listening practice, juggling, reading, moving, sorting, etc.  We will wrap the thinking tubs and begin the yoga practice once everyone arrives.

We will be having fun with Mary Poppins while incorporating Lexington School District One's Power Skills:
Perseverance
Integrity
Critical Thinking
Accountability
Willingness to Take Risks
Interpersonal Skills
Communication
Collaboration

One way we will practice accountability is to honor our bodies, brains, and hearts.  If the movement or stretch offered is not a good fit, don't force the fun.  Daddies' bodies will be able to do certain things, Mommies' bodies will be able to do certain things, children's bodies may be able to do things neither Moms or Dads may do . . . and that's ALL GOOD.  Yoga is NOT about hurting yourself, it's about starting right where you are and growing from there!

Wear comfortable clothes, bring mats (or beach towels).  Mary Poppins' says, "It's all in the way you look at things."  Tomorrow we'll practice being flexible in our thoughts, feelings and bodies!

Let me know if you any questions!  Looking forward to tomorrow. 🎈☂πŸ§πŸŽ πŸ“šπŸš²πŸ›πŸ‘›

More Feathered Fun

The art challenge was to draw a picture of yourself with wings!
Then we practiced moving feathers with our breath.

We learned about the feet of birds today!
The Common Flicker uses climbing feet to hold onto the trunk of a tree:
Mallards have swimming feet to use as paddles:
Robins have perching feet to grip branches:
Killdeer rake the soil with scratching feet to search for food:
Osprey have grasping feet to snatch fish from water:
Three-toed running feet help pheasants run fast:

We practiced another flying animal pose . . .
BAT!

Next week we'll FLY with Mary Poppins!  We have on our wings, READY to TAKE FLIGHT!

Sleep Hygiene

This week @ zipaDeeBee Yoga, we'll explore the benefits of a good night's rest! Are you sleep deprived? What are some practical sleep strategies to improve your sleep hygiene? We're digging into Power Sleep by Dr. James Maas as we breathe, balance, s-t-r-e-t-c-h and strengthen on the way to a better night of rest.πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

Birds of a Feather

This week at yoga, we began with a story about two birds named "Steve."

We pretended to birds . . .
HAWK

ROADRUNNER

PIGEON

We used a variety of objects to represent different kinds of bird bills:

The scissors represent the chisel bill of the WOODPECKER.

Here are some trees for the WOODPECKER to drill with his chisel bill.

This is a flock of long-legged SPOONBILLS.  A SPOONBILL has a detector bill that moves through the water to find food.

We used this posture to be a NIGHTHAWK.  This bird has a trap bill to catch insects.

This scooping, ceramic hand represents a scoop bill.

A PELICAN uses its scoop bill to scoop fish from the water.

Here is a seed for the FINCH to use its nutcracker bill to open.

During our final relaxation, we pretended to be a bird resting in its nest!🐦

Next week, more fun with birds and other things that fly?!  We will float feathers and race penguins!!🐧

12 Days of Christmas on the 10th Day of Christmas

If December 25th is the 1st Day of Christmas, today, January 3rd is the 10th Day of Christmas!
We shook up snow globes . . .

then quietly and
patiently
watched the snowflakes fall.

Next we yoga-ed the 12 Days of Christmas in this order: 11, 7, 8, 12, 5, 3, 4 (2 of the 4 Calling Birds), 1, 9, 2, 4 (the other 2 birds), 10 (that's today) and 6

Here we are swimming with the swans:

We called our sun sequence a GOLDEN RING!

Here's a triangle with three sides and three corners for three French Hens on the 3rd Day of Christmas:

Here's the first two of our four Calling Birds:
(1) one that wades in the water
(2) one that flies

Here's a lady dancing on the 9th Day of Christmas:

Two Turtles, Doving?!

Here's the final two Calling Birds:
 (3) heron
(4) pigeon

We laid down to rest with the six geese after having so much Christmas fun!

Looking forward to PEACEFUL and CALM moments in 2019!
