Yoga Camp Day One

We had a WONDERFUL 1st day of Yoga Camp!  Thank you for sharing your child with us.  :-)

Here's some talking points for you if your child did not clue you in to the fun we shared today:

Today we introduced ourselves and our favorite animals.  We had several dogs, a couple horses and monkeys, one purple and red giraffe that eats apples, and a dragon! We pretended to be animals, just like Elephant and Piggie's I'm a Frog!, during our yoga practice today.

Our emphasis was on introducing yoga as a balancing act of what's going on in your brain, body, and heart/feelings.  It's more than just pretzeling your body!  We strengthened our core and worked on recognizing how each person can make the world a better place like no one else!

We tried out belly breathing/crocodile breath, alternate nostril breathing, and breath of joy.  Our party trick yoga posture was "crow."  Our inversion was "legs up the wall." Kiddos enjoyed final relaxation and especially enjoyed trying out the lavender eye pillows.

Our project of the day was "gimp."  You can Google all kinds of knots/stitches with plastic lanyards, but we practiced the "box" today, because we DON'T want to be "boxed in."  We want to be "FREE" to be who we are to make the world a better place like only we can.  :-)

Our Peace Builder of the Day was Jane Goodall.  We read The Watcher by Jeanette Winter.  We played the Peace Builders game to remind ourselves WE are Peace Builders.

Tomorrow we emphasize "healthy choices."  The colors are yellow and green.  Thank you for signing the waivers, these are for my insurance. I told the kiddos, these are the "I-know-I-could-get-hurt" forms.  Also, let us know if you're okay with us taking pictures of your kiddos.  We would like to make a video for us to enjoy--this will be available online but will be password protected.

Looking forward to more fun on Tuesday!

My daughter Hannah has been helping me with this project!  Tonight we did the yoga moves with "Lord, I Lift Your Name on High."  The name of the ZipaDee-Dance is "Balance at the Beach!"  There is a "how to" video if you'd like to watch the "set up."

My husband and oldest two Broamlettes built me a beach in the front yard a couple weeks ago .  .  .  I always wanted a "House at the Beach" but now I have a "Beach at my House" .  .  . I love these people!  Have fun s-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g, STRENGTHENING and breathing with this silliness.

Side Bends and Windows

We had 7 yogis at last week's Pisgah Yoga! WOW!  We explored lateral bends, but I wanted to do a better job of explaining why stretching your side is beneficial.

Side bends bring balance to your entire body. They lengthen the abdominal muscles, hips, and thigh muscles, while improving flexibility in the spine.

Side bends also stretch the muscles between the ribs (the intercostal muscles). These muscles can get short and tight in daily life, due to time spent sitting and slouching. Tight intercostals can weaken your posture, resulting in neck and shoulder tension. They also prevent a full range of motion in the ribs, which can restrict your breathing. Stretching out the intercostals will open up the ribcage and lungs, which will improve your breathing capacity. It will also relieve respiratory conditions, such as asthma, allergies, and colds.

Additionally, side bends stretch the abdominal muscles and digestive organs. This aids and regulates digestion, elimination, and metabolism.

I'm enjoying yoga with Deni at Edisto Beach!  This week she shared a fun quote that went something like this:  You are not in charge of the people who come into your life, but you are in control of who to throw out the window .  .  . What a hoot?!  She described "a friend" that called and hinted about visiting with her at the beach, and this person does this often.  But wait there's more .  .  .  this guest brings 2 dogs that are not house trained .  .  .  Deni shared that you have to throw some folks, gently and lovingly "out the window!"  What kind of cleaning up do you need to do?

If you get to Edisto Island, Deni Ashby teaches at the Education/Civic Center 8:30 on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 9:15 on Fridays.  Her classes are $12 and she's worth every penny.  :-)

Looking forward to stretching and strengthening with you in July!  Namaste,
D'Etta

There's no charge tonight because it's our only yoga in JUNE!  Come explore "lateral bends" and Ecclesiastes 3 -- "To Everything There IS a Season!"

SuperStrech Yoga App Tweeted today:
Yoga sets us INWARDLY FREE. Happiness is our birthright. As we get older we get more closed, shut down, insecure, effected by opinions of...

Rick Warren shared in The Purpose Driven Life:  You discover your role in life through your relationships with others.

Come hang out with some good people this evening.  Breathe, stretch and GROW.  You may not feel like "a room without a roof" but you'll experience "freedom" and "discovery!"

Happy Wednesday!
