We enjoyed learning about sloths this afternoon!
We read a good story and checked out some sloth facts while moving and breathing together!
There are three-toed and two-toed sloths. All sloths have three claws on the hind legs. The difference is in their forelimb claws. Sloths should really be called three-fingered" or "two-fingered." Three-toed sloths are diurnal, while two-toed ones are nocturnal. We moved like the sun and moon for each!๐๐
Both kinds of sloths are descendants of the giant ground sloth that became extinct 10,000 years ago. This animal weighed several tons and was 12 feet tall! We worked a pose to be giant like this sloth.
Three-toed sloths do not have cone cells in their eyes and cannot detect color. We moved like a rainbow for the colors they cannot see.๐
Sloths move 6-8 feet per minute . . . do you know any other animals that move s-l-o-w-l-y?๐ข
WARNING: This is a little gross . . .The fact that made us laugh the most is three-toed sloths come down from the trees to poo once a week (or month)! The do a poo dance, dig a hole, and then lose 1/3 of their body's weight . . . that's a lot of poo??!! Here's a "poo dancer" pose?!
We rested with a progressive relaxation exercise: squeeze toes and feet and r-e-l-a-x . . . squeeze your legs, bum, and tummy and r-e-l-a-x . . . squeeze your hands, arms and shoulders and r-e-l-a-x . . . squeeze your face and r-e-l-a-x . . .
